"Skeleton of ___" March 2020
This piece is inspired by gradual destruction of tissue, while decomposing in the earth after death. The frame, or the skeleton, is visible only through small pockets that have not yet been taken over. “Skeleton of ___” also references identity and the layers that make up every individual. If we peel back our layers and deconstruct ourselves- how did we begin to build ourselves into who we are?
This is the second half of my exploration with the frame of a bike wheel. The frame is carefully wrapped, sewn, and knotted into patterns that create a weblike structure around & through the spokes. Materials used in the frame include various yarns, thread, hand-dyed silk gauze, caution tape, poems on receipt paper, nylon, satin, and ribbon.
"Swept" April 2019
The years in my grandparent’s house are some of the most treasured memories of my childhood. "Swept" Is inspired by both the time I spent there, and the innate sense of self I gained from growing up there. I remember seeing decorative broomsticks my grandmother had stationed throughout the house. In the pagan tradition, witches place broomsticks beside the entrances/exits as a symbolic way of sweeping out the “old” negative energy, & beginning anew. This piece is in honor of learning when to clear out toxicity.
Natural weaving crafted on found branch made from various yarn, hand-dyed silk gauze, thread, caution tape, t-shirts, velvet, twine, cheese cloth, ivy branches, ribbon, tinsel, and strips of cotton & corduroy.
"Bioluminescence" February 2019
This sculpture addresses violence within exclusively queer relationships through the use of shadows, different textures, colors, and form. Caution tape hangs along the edges, mimicking the warning of stinging tentacles. The vibrant materials glow underneath colored lights, inducing the feel of a nocturnal environment. inspired by bioluminescent coral, jellyfish, and parasitic fungi.
The first exploration of the frame of a bike wheel. "Bioluminescence" features a constructed surface made from nylon, hand-dyed silk gauze, caution tape, silk, thread, stretch mesh, metal rings, poems on receipt paper, satin, and tulle.
"Weighted" April 2020
Inspired by weighted blankets, this piece addresses the need for physical intimacy and deep touch to feel grounded and centered. "Weighted" was crafted during the COVID-19 lockdown while I was unable to physically be with my family. This piece was created in reference to mental illness among queer individuals, texture as a way of accessing memory, and the ongoing negotiation of what safety and comfort mean to me.
"Weighted" is a Woven blanket, made up of 9 independent weaving panels, all created from recycled materials.
